Once the sodium bentonite waterproof blanket (GCL) has been installed, it is crucial to take proper measures for its maintenance. Firstly, the geomembrane should be laid without delay to safeguard the GCL from being corroded by wind and rain. In situations where the geomembrane cannot be placed immediately after the installation of the GCL, covering it with a tarpaulin or plastic film is necessary to prevent such corrosion.
Secondly, after the installation is completed, efforts must be made to protect the GCL from damage caused by vehicle rolling and the intrusion of other foreign objects. After the construction work is over, there should be no presence of mud lumps, dirt, debris or any other foreign substances on the GCL that could potentially damage the anti-seepage layer.
During the stages of storage and transportation, special attention should be paid to the protection of the rolls of sodium bentonite waterproof blanket (GCL) before they are unpacked. The rolls of GCL should be stacked in a flat area that does not accumulate water. The stacking height should be restricted to not exceed the equivalent of four rolls, and the identification labels on the rolls need to be clearly visible. Any damage to the GCL that results from improper storage or handling practices is not allowed for use in the current project.
During transportation, which includes the transfer from the material storage site to the working site on site, the rolls of GCL must be protected from any form of damage. Rolls of GCL that have suffered physical damage must undergo repair procedures. In cases where the GCL is severely damaged, it cannot be used and should be removed from the site and replaced promptly.
When it comes to dealing with damaged GCL materials, there are specific guidelines to follow. Firstly, any GCL material that has come into contact with leaked chemical solvents will be prohibited from being used in this project based on the judgment of the supervising engineer.
Secondly, if the GCL gets damaged (such as being torn, punctured, etc.) during the installation process, a “patch” can be cut from a new roll of GCL and placed over the damaged area for repair. The distance from each side of the patch to the damaged area should not be less than 300 mm. Before laying the “patch”, it is advisable to sprinkle some granular bentonite or bentonite slurry around the damaged area. If necessary, certain adhesives can also be used to prevent the patch from shifting, or a small piece of GCL can be placed beneath the damaged area to enhance the repair effect.
This comprehensive maintenance approach helps to ensure the long-term performance and integrity of the sodium bentonite waterproof blanket (GCL) in various engineering applications.
